Young Artist Competition

TBD:  November 2012

PURPOSE


1.To afford opportunity for recognition of outstanding young musicians in the greater Twin Cities.
2.To select young musicians whose artistic qualities, potential, and desire qualifies them to continue the study of music.
3.To encourage young musicians to carry on the tradition of music performance.
4.To bring winners to the attention of music clubs, music patrons, and audiences who may assist in furthering their careers.
5.To provide the opportunity for high school students to perform as a soloist with a major community symphony orchestra.

ENTRANCE

1.Applicants must submit a completed application form and a $15 application fee to the MAM office no later than October 26, 2012. No late applications will be accepted. Checks should be payable to MAM.
2.Applications must include signatures of parent or guardian and music teacher(s).
3.All deadlines must be met. There will be no exceptions. Failure to meet all requirements will result in disqualification.

ELIGIBILITY

1.Applicants must be a 2012-2013 high school junior or senior and live in the greater Twin Cities Area. Participants in greater Twin Cities musical organizations will be accepted.
2.Applicants must be studying privately. (If not studying privately, contact the MAM office to discuss the possibility of waiving this rule.)
3.Former Minnetonka Young Artist Program first place winners are not eligible.

COMPETITION

1.Auditionee must:
a. Perform one movement of the required repertoire, selected by the MAM Young Artist Program advisors. Memorization not required.
b. Perform one movement of a work of their own choosing. Memorization not required.
c. Furnish one copy of each of their prepared works to the judges.
d. Provide own accompanist.

2.Definitions:
a. Music from all periods will be acceptable.
b. Music must be originally composed for the artist's instrument.

3.Rules for auditions:
a. Each selection must be heard for a minimum of five minutes.
b. Instrumentalists: A portion of at least one concerto must be heard.
Vocalists: Standard vocal literature (aria, oratoria, song cycle, etc.) must be performed.

4.Audiences will be admitted to all auditions, but no applause will be allowed.

5.Location for the competition will be:

REPERTOIRE

1.The repertoire requirements have been prepared by the MAM Young Artist Program Advisors. A list of required repertoire may be obtained by visiting the MAM website, http://www.musicassociation.org/, calling 952-401-5954, or by writing to:

ADJUDICATION


1.Adjudication of high caliber will be provided by MAM for all competitions.
2.There will be at least three judges for each audition.
3.An auditionee’s present teacher will not be eligible to serve as a judge for that audition.
4.Auditionees will be known by designated numbers only until the audition is completed.
5.If the necessity of a second audition arises, such as a tie, an additional audition will be scheduled within a period of a month. Entirely different repertoire will be used.
6.Entrants will be judge against a standard, not against each other. If no entrant meets the standard, there will be no winner.
 
AWARDS

The following awards will be given to the winners of the Minnetonka Young Artist Competition.  Awards will be presented at the first February 2013 Minnetonka Symphony Orchestra concert.
 
         First Place Winner**
       - Two performances with the Minnetonka Symphony
       Orchestra in February 2013
         - $500
         - Young Artist Plaque
 
         Second Place Winner
       - $300
       - Young Artist Plaque

         Third Place Winner
       - $100
       - Young Artist Plaque
 
**First place winner is required to provide a formal black and white photograph and a biography to be used for publicity by December 1, 2012.
      

**Solo performance music and dates will be determined by the Music Director.
