Music Association of Minnetonka (M.A.M.)

Job Title: Music Director, Minnetonka Concert Choir     

Position Objective

This position is responsible for the development and growth of young musicians in the Minnetonka Concert Choir.  The Minnetonka Concert Choir is a performing, touring, preparatory ensemble for girls and boys in grades six through eight. Girls in the Concert Choir may eventually move on to sing in the Chamber Choir. The Concert Choir rehearses at the Arts Center on 7, 18285 Hwy 7, Minnetonka.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities

  • Lead Concert Choir in weekly rehearsal on Thursday evenings from 6:15 p.m. - 8:15 p.m. and one Saturday a month from 9:00 - 11:00 a.m. from September – June.
  • Select and prepare music for the ensemble. 
  • Work within budget provided by M.A.M. to obtain music and materials.
  • Lead the Concert Choir in 6-8 performances each concert season.
  • Work with M.A.M. office to secure performance venues and needed equipment and resources.
  • Conduct two one-day choir camps each season.  
  • Lead Concert Choir on its annual national tour.  Determine tour options and select tour destination.  Work with ensemble manager to ensure tour logistics are effectively handled.  Travel with touring ensemble, participate in their activities when possible; lead rehearsals, concerts and public appearances.
  • Actively recruit new choir members and participate in M.A.M. recruiting activities, as requested. 
  • Conduct auditions for new members.
  • Participate in M.A.M. fund-raising activities, such as choir performances, as requested. 
  • Foster a collaborative environment with other M.A.M. ensembles.
  • Positively represent M.A.M. in interactions with young musicians, their parents, the general public, and volunteers. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Two – five years’ experience directing a youth choir.
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills acquired through work with young musicians and their parents.

About the Music Association of Minnetonka 

Founded in 1974, the Music Association of Minnetonka consists of 10 performing ensembles including 3 youth choirs, 3 adult vocal ensembles, 3 orchestras and a concert band.  Nearly 300 community musicians, ranging from school-age children to adults in their 80’s, participate in M.A.M. ensembles. The Music Association of Minnetonka is believed to be one of the largest community music organization partnerships in the country.
